Offering blending and attaching tips
About ME
Hi, I’m Phaedra, and this is my art studio. I’ve been teaching creativity to children for over 15 years. As a teacher, no matter the medium, I carefully curate an array of tools and materials for projects, challenging students to problem-solve their visions into existence. Rather than show and tell, I wait until a student has a particular need, then offer a few possible options for attaching, designing, or mending. When a student brings their work to me exclaiming, “I’m done!” I set the work out in front of us and we stand back to look at it together. “Is there anything else you can add or change to make it better?” I ask. If we don’t slow down, we sometimes forget to look. When a young artist takes the time to stop and look, to reflect and consider, they often discover they do have more to say.
As an artist, I’m drawn to the tactile qualities of paper, clay, and cement, Earth-derived materials that keep my work grounded, while many of my pieces push the limits of what the materials can do. My collage and sculptural works explore the juxtaposition of strength and fragility as well as concepts including discovery, invention, possibility, and metamorphosis.
I’m also a graphic designer, well versed in creating clean, powerful 2D design. My background in this field infiltrates all of my work and is reflected in the color and compositional choices of my students.
